What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists are specialists in the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones, joints, nerves, ligaments etc). The aim is to help reduce pain, restore function and help to prevent the risk of further injury. Techniques such as massage, manipulations, acupuncture, and other hands on treatments are used in conjunction to a comprehensive exercise/rehabilitation programme. It is one of the few therapies that is supported by the NHS, National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), and is recommended by Doctors/Consultants for multiple types of injuries or post surgery rehabilitation.

It is suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant and post natal clients, with all different manner of problems: From sports injuries to long standing back pain.

What is women's health physiotherapy?

02

Emily the Physio is proud to start offering women's health physiotherapy appointments. These appointments help with more intimate issues such as incontinence, prolapse, sexual discomfort and general pelvic pains. These appointments can include an internal assessment to gain a greater understanding of the cause of the problem and the best options to treat this.

At the moment these are available to pregnant or post natal women only, however we are hoping to increase this offering to all women in the near future, so watch this space!

Do I need physiotherapy or a sports massage?

me and t 2_edited

A Sports massage consists of a brief assessment to determine if you are suitable for the treatment, followed by the massage. These treatments are great for people with general aches/pains from desk work, sporting activities, excessive driving etc. It is designed to relax the musculature, improve muscle repair and reduce muscle fatigue.

A physiotherapy appointment consists of an in depth assessment both through discussion and physical examination, treatment and a rehabilitation programme provided.  This is excellent for anyone that has an injury or pain that they would like resolved. This could be from fractured ankles to whiplash to long standing back pain.

What should I wear?

Your clinician will need access to the area of your body that you are having discomfort in. So for example if it is your knee then you may need to bring in shorts or loose fitting trousers. If you are having a mummy MOT, the clinician will need to see your tummy so wearing a top and leggings would be best compared to a dress.

If you are having pains when running, bringing your running shoes would be very beneficial as this can be assessed during the session.

Is my treatment covered by insurance?

HCPC

Emily the Physio is not registered with any insurance companies at present. However if your insurance company allows you to select your own physiotherapist and then claim back the costs i.e. Simply Health, then your care may be covered. Emily the Physio is registered with the HCPC, CSP and has been qualified for 7 years, which are the usual prerequisites insurance companies ask for when offering cover.

Please note: If you book a sports massage only, this is what will be appearing on your invoice, not Physiotherapy. Emily the Physio is unable to change the wording for insurance claims so make sure your insurance company cover sports massage as part of your cover.
